Support worker’s client care enhanced through Level 4 studies

Health and Wellbeing

Already working in healthcare, but keen to keep up to date with sector knowledge and improve the quality of care for her clients, Carlie Parsons decided to upskill with the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Care and Support) (Level 4).

“The NZTC Health and Wellbeing program was recommended to me by my company, and as I wanted to keep learning and gaining more knowledge about the job I do as a support worker, I thought it was the perfect opportunity!”

For Parsons, the Level 4 Blended Learning mode, combining the flexibility of online studies with practical workplace learning is the ideal balance of theory and practice.

She says having access to course, research and support materials via NZTC Online at any time, along with lecturer support is the perfect way to juggle work commitments and study.

“The study format gives time for those who work full-time like myself, it may feel daunting at first, but with the support of the lecturers it is totally doable.

“The lecturers have been very helpful, especially if I have questions or need tasks explained in more detail.

I might annoy them with all my messages but they are very patient and are great at clarifying the question. The IT Help team are also really helpful.”

Partway through her studies, she already feels more confident in her support worker role, with new knowledge and skills learned.

“The ‘Supporting Collaborative Care’ course was really insightful for me as it put into perspective the importance of effective teamwork and collaboration, and working together with other healthcare professionals such as nurses, the client and their whānau for better health outcomes.

“My Level 4 studies are also opening my eyes to the way we use communication with clients in a culturally responsive and safe way.”

After completing her studies, Parsons has a desire to continue learning and improving and hopes to use her Level 4 studies to pathway into higher level programs in nursing.

NZTC is currently offering zero fees study across its Health and Wellbeing programs.
