Support Worker shares her motivation for a rewarding career in healthcare
Name: Jho Magon
Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Support) (Level 4)
For Support Worker and Level 4 graduate, Jho Magon, it was her family and love for the elderly that first inspired her to pursue a career in caring for others.
“I grew up surrounded with family and relatives with careers in healthcare and was initially inspired by them.
“I never got to experience having grandparents as both my maternal and paternal side died before I was born, so being around the elderly and looking after them somehow fills that gap.”
Now working her dream job in healthcare and assisting people from all walks of life, especially the elderly, she feels confident she has found the career for her.
“Ever since I started working in a retirement community as a carer, I knew I had found the job that fits me.
“Not many people can say this, but I love the job that I’m doing and the only goal that I have is to do better in what I do, to become more efficient and to deliver the best care and support to my clients by doing more job-related training and learning.”
She decided to upskill with NZTC after the Health and Wellbeing programs were highly recommended by a colleague. The flexible workplace learning appealed to Magon, allowing her to fit work commitments alongside study.
“NZTC has definitely helped prepare me for my workplace and has equipped me with the necessary knowledge to help me better carry out my job and to accomplish my tasks effectively.”
In her work, Magon finds joy and satisfaction in helping make a difference in vulnerable people’s lives.
“Being able to help others no matter how small to improve their quality of life, or just by simply putting a smile on their faces, is the best part of my job.”
Magon reflects on what it takes to work in healthcare and encourages others to also take the opportunity to upskill.
“If you are compassionate in helping others and want to make a difference in people’s lives, then pursuing a career in healthcare might just be for you. It is rewarding and fulfilling to care for those who are most vulnerable.
“And if you want to gain a deeper understanding of what it’s all about, NZTC can offer the courses you need to enhance your knowledge and skills to become an efficient healthcare worker.”
