Study Secondary Teacher Education at NZTC
Transform Your Passion Into a Teaching Career
Become a secondary school teacher through a qualification built with schools, designed for classrooms, and grounded in the communities it serves. Our secondary teaching program transforms your subject passion into a teaching career.
At NZTC, you don't wait until the end of the year to step into a classroom. From week one, you're in school, learning your craft where it actually happens, surrounded by a dedicated team invested in your success.
Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary)
Combining in-school professional experience with online academic study, this qualification prepares graduates to teach across Aotearoa New Zealand’s secondary schools.
Built with schools, not just for them
From the very first planning meeting, secondary school leaders, iwi, and regional education stakeholders were at the table. Every course, every placement, every outcome reflects what schools actually need from new teachers.
In school, from the start
Our school-based learning mode means you spend real, sustained time in real classrooms — not just at the end of the year. You'll be teaching, reflecting, and growing under the guidance of experienced Associate Teachers from day one.
Grounded in evidence
From cognitive science and neurodiversity to cultural responsiveness and trauma-informed practice. Every course is built on current, rigorous research, applied directly to secondary classrooms in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Proudly bicultural and inclusive
Te Tiriti o Waitangi is not an add-on, it is foundational. Our programme weaves tikanga Māori, Pacific values, and multicultural awareness throughout every course, equipping you to teach every student you'll meet.
Nationwide, with local roots
With regional visiting lecturers, curriculum specialists, and school partnerships from Northland to Golden Bay, you'll get nationally consistent quality with deeply local support wherever you are in New Zealand.
Future ready from day one
AI in education, literacy and numeracy across the curriculum, neurodiverse learner strategies - we prepare you for the secondary classroom as it exists today, not as it was ten years ago.
Associate Teacher
A fully certificated, NZTC-approved teacher at your school. Your day-to-day guide, mentor, and assessor - someone who knows your classroom and your learners intimately.
Visiting Lecturer
An experienced NZTC educator who visits you face-to-face in school, observes your teaching, and provides personalised feedback throughout the year, not just at placement time. They also support your academic coursework, helping you connect theory with what you're seeing in the classroom every day.
Curriculum Specialist
Subject expertise, on call. Where your school doesn't have a specialist in your teaching discipline, we appoint a Curriculum Specialist, so no matter what you teach or where you are, you have targeted guidance in your subject area.
