Warm welcome for new students at NZTC orientation
Orientation week at New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) was extra special as our 35 year anniversary celebrations continue.
Nearly 80 students were welcomed to the College during the February orientation at the Auckland and Christchurch Campuses last week.
Hailing from China, India, Korea, Japan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and New Zealand, students had the opportunity to learn more about the College’s systems and support services as they began their study journey.
Included in the week-long orientation program was the traditional Māori welcoming ceremony known as a pōhiri.
NZTC Chief Executive Selena Fox spoke on behalf of the staff and reflected on the College’s 35 year history. She shared feedback from a past student who said her anxiety about study disappeared after the pōhiri providing peace of mind for the new students.
“In your days ahead your anxiety will vanish. You will experience caring support, you will be challenged, you will grow and learn, and you will be expected to give all of yourself. In return we will grow and learn alongside you through Vision, Heart, Competence and Spirit,” said Fox.
Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Early Childhood Education) student Leena Rebello, from India, spoke on behalf of the new students.
The eloquent speaker shared how she is looking forward to upskilling in early childhood education and the new challenges ahead. Through her qualification, she hopes to gain management and leadership experience to support her in her goal of becoming an education administrator in New Zealand.
A common highlight for the international students were the campus city tours. Auckland students toured the waterfront delighting in the stunning harbour views before exploring the Auckland museum, while Christchurch students became acquainted with the garden city before exploring the botanical gardens.
It was a chance for students to solidify new friendships they had made throughout the week and familiarise themselves with each city’s public transport system as many will be using it as their main mode of transport.
Many students reflected on their orientation experience and the following insights were shared:
“This is my first time studying online and the orientation program really helped me. I feel so grateful that I do not need to worry about problems when they arise at NZTC, because there is such a strong and wonderful team behind me who are always happy to offer help.”
“The city tour was interesting and we learnt a lot about the city and shared some memorable experiences about different cultures too.”
“I love NZTC a lot! I believe I will have a great time studying here!”
“I had a blast during the ‘fun’tastic week.”
“A very warm welcome and good hospitality. Teachers and staff are very helpful and are available for guidance at any point in time.”
