Updated Te Whāriki launched

Early Childhood Education News

New Zealand’s world renowned and internationally respected early childhood education curriculum has been updated. The revised version of Te Whāriki launched this week after input from a group of leading early learning academics and practitioners from a range of different contexts.

The updated Te Whāriki better aligns with the learning interests and aspirations of today’s children, their families and New Zealand communities. Two curriculum pathways of equal status share a common framework within the refreshed document -  Te Whāriki: He whāriki mātauranga mō ngā mokopuna o Aotearoa Early childhood curriculum and Te Whāriki a te Kōhanga Reo.

The Ministry of Education shares, “Its clearer focus on what matters most will support early learning services to determine local priorities and design quality learning programmes with their parents and whānau for the youngest learners.”

A hand-selected review team of independent experts were appointed to write the update with NZTC Advisory Committee member Dr Claire McLachlan selected for her significant expertise and experience.

Dr McLachlan is widely published in the field of early childhood curriculum, assessment and evaluation, and pedagogy in New Zealand and beyond. Over many years she has made a significant contribution to the early childhood sector and NZTC has had the privilege of her expertise for over 15 years.

NZTC Chief Executive Selena Fox commented, “Our Te Whāriki is globally respected and treasured in New Zealand. Since its first days it has significantly contributed to our early childhood sector’s recognition as an international leader in ECE.

“It is a guiding light for teachers of young children in their provision of outstanding care and education curricula. NZTC is eagerly sharing the update with staff and students and we acknowledge and thank all the contributors to this update, especially our hugely valued Claire.”
