Holly Smith is a graduate of NZTC’s Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Early Childhood Education), and is currently studying towards a Master of Early Childhood Education qualification.
Holly’s story is one of dedication, growth and seizing opportunities. As a single mother, she was determined to create a better future for herself and her young son. At 21, in her first ECE role, Holly became inspired by her ECE manager and fell in love with the Te Whāriki curriculum. This convinced Holly to enrol in an Initial Teacher Education qualification and she started her journey at NZTC with the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE).
“I love the [Te Whāriki] principles and strands, and how that looks in our day-to-day practice of being a kaiako,” she explains. “I was unqualified, and my manager really showed me the passion of teaching, and how honourable and special it is to be there for our tamariki on their learning journeys… She really lit that fire inside and her wisdom and advice inspired me to become that person for other people.”
After completing her degree, Holly realised she wanted to develop a deeper understanding of ECE. She took her learning to the next level and pursued postgraduate study. Progressing from the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) to the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (ECE) and now the Master of Early Childhood Education, Holly has unlocked leadership opportunities and opened doors to increased remuneration.
“I wanted to extend my knowledge in ECE,” said Holly. “Postgraduate study provided me a deeper understanding about ECE in the broader context of New Zealand.”
After completing her Postgraduate Diploma, Holly immediately moved into the Master of Early Childhood Education. The study program pathway process allowed her to build on her previous coursework, significantly reducing the time required to achieve her master’s degree.
With her advanced qualifications, Holly has achieved pay parity and would like to eventually use her postgraduate qualifications to inspire future ECE teachers as a lecturer.
“The deeper understanding I’ve gained through my studies has not only improved my teaching practice but also prepared me for leadership opportunities down the track,” she says. “I want to give back by mentoring other educators and, one day, teaching future ECE professionals.”
Holly’s journey highlights the many advantages of postgraduate study in early childhood education; whether it’s stepping into leadership, achieving pay parity, or deepening professional expertise, the benefits are transformative.
