Barbara Scanlan
Behind every successful student is a strong support system, and at NZTC, our dedicated advisors are making a profound difference in the lives of learners every day.
Since May 2016, Barbara Scanlan has been a driving force at NZTC, initially working as an ECE lecturer and then as a curriculum advisor. Over the past two and a half years, she has served as the Student Services Manager, guiding students through the complexities of higher education and ensuring their success.
Education has undergone a profound transformation in recent years, shifting towards greater inclusivity and responsiveness to diverse learning needs. As society evolves, education has followed suit, embracing different ways of learning and ensuring students feel supported.
"Education is a gift to society," says Barbara. "It has the power to create opportunities, foster inclusion, and shape the future."
NZTC’s Student Support Team plays a pivotal role in guiding students from the moment they embark on their academic journey. Every student receives a welcome call and message, setting the foundation for a supportive experience.
Those enrolling in Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programs undergo interviews to ensure they grasp their course requirements. For international students, early orientation cultivates a sense of belonging. "Starting fresh in a new country can be daunting," Barbara acknowledges. "We want them to feel like they’re part of something bigger, part of a community."
Recognising the diverse challenges students face, NZTC prioritises tailored check-ins for those who declare learning disabilities or require additional support.
"Students are encouraged to reach out at any time. We are here to listen, guide, and make sure every student has what they need to succeed."
Balancing academic life with other responsibilities can be overwhelming. Many students juggle part-time or full-time work while studying, requiring thoughtful time management. International students navigate cultural adjustments alongside their coursework.
"The key is planning ahead and knowing that support is available," Barbara advises. "No one should feel like they have to manage everything alone."
To alleviate student stress, NZTC offers study strategies, time management guidance, assessment extensions, and resources to encourage social connections.
"We aim to reduce the stress any student experiences," Barbara explains. "Our goal is to ensure every learner thrives and knows they’re not alone. If you’re struggling, reach out—we're here to help."
Each day presents new challenges and triumphs for NZTC’s dedicated Student Support Team. Available Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, they handle inquiries, facilitate orientation, conduct interviews, assist with withdrawals and re-enrolment, and provide academic guidance.
"No two days are the same," Barbara shares. "And that’s what makes this work meaningful."
Feedback from students remains invaluable in refining NZTC’s services. "We take student voices seriously," Barbara affirms. "Their experiences help us shape a more inclusive and effective learning environment."
At its core, NZTC’s Student Services extends far beyond academic assistance—it stands as a steadfast pillar of encouragement, empowerment, and confidence-building.
"Success isn’t just about grades," Barbara concludes. "It’s about growth, resilience, and knowing you have people who believe in you every step of the way."
