intouch

NZTC’s New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5) is the first step for international students who have not studied early childhood education before but want to work towards New Zealand teacher registration.

Students will gain an introduction to New Zealand’s unique and well-known early childhood education curriculum, Te Whāriki, and gain a strong foundation of theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of early childhood education.

Program highlights

  • Study in a new country with unparalleled wraparound support

  • Option to secure a Pathway Student Visa for up to three years

  • Gain a globally-recognised qualification

  • Further study available towards New Zealand teacher registration

Program structure

Students will study seven courses as part of this program through Blended Learning. The academic courses will be studied one after the other on NZTC Online, rather than several at the same time like other universities. Students will spend 16 hours per week in a Home Centre gaining practical experience and complete 40 days of full-time Field Practice during program study.

International students will also attend compulsory weekly tutorials to meet visa requirements.

Entry criteria

With an overall IELTS score of 5.5 and a minimum band score of 5.0, the Level 5 Diploma is a great way for students to start their early childhood education studies in New Zealand, especially if they don’t meet the English language requirements for the Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) yet. Students will also need to be at least 18 years old, and to meet the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand and Police conditions. Read the full entry criteria here.

Pathway Student Visa

The Pathway Student Visa offered by Immigration New Zealand allows international students to study up to three courses, one after the other, on a single student visa. For our programs, this is available for students who want to gain New Zealand teacher registration through the New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5), the New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 6), and the Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) pathway.

Students apply for the three programs at the beginning of their study period to gain the Pathway Student Visa, however this doesn’t guarantee their place in the Level 6 Diploma or the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE). They will need to meet the prerequisites and English language requirements for each course to stay in New Zealand on a Pathway Student Visa.
