Spotlight on: Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education)
Our Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and is one of our most popular early childhood education programs.
International students have the opportunity to study in a new country with unparalleled wraparound support. Our programs enable a balance between study, work and other commitments, while students put their learning into practice in early childhood centres to prepare for a career in an important and in-demand sector.
Below is a brief overview of what they can expect during their studies:
Program highlights
Exposure to New Zealand’s unique early childhood education curriculum
Practical experience in early childhood education centres under the guidance of fully registered teachers
A globally-recognised qualification
Program structure
Unlike other universities that offer several courses at the same time, students studying the Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) will study one course at a time. This gives them more flexibility to balance study with practical work experience in an early childhood education centre.
During each course, students are introduced to New Zealand’s well-known and unique early childhood education curriculum Te Whāriki, and learn planning, teaching and assessment methods for early childhood education as well as specialist subjects like arts and science.
Resources and support
As part of their study, international students will access resources and discussion forums through the learning platform NZTC Online, where they can talk with their lecturers and other students. While they are on Field Practice in an ECE centre, they will also have the dedicated support of an Associate Teacher who will help them to develop their teaching practice, and regular meetings with NZTC lecturers to check their progress.
Opportunities for graduates
Successful graduates are able to apply for New Zealand teacher registration and provisional certification, or further their skills and knowledge through postgraduate study. ECE registered teacher roles are currently on the Immigration New Zealand Green List, which means that graduates who apply for registration and work in New Zealand may be able to get residence after two years of working.
