Sharing the spirit of Christmas

Health and Wellbeing

Mother of two and Level 4 graduate, Joan Razon, loves caring for the elderly and finds the Christmas season a wonderful time to show extra love to her vulnerable clients.

“Christmas is the best time of the year and is always a special celebration for the residents and their families as they come together in peace, love, joy and laughter.”

Working at Elms Court Retirement Village in Christchurch, Razon says everyone, including the residents, get on board with the Christmas preparations to help make the day extra special.

“With the help of the residents, we usually decorate the facility with Christmas decorations, put up Christmas trees and hang Christmas lights inside and outside the facility.

“Their involvement in each activity is important as it makes them feel valued and also enhances their strength and creativity.”

The lead up to Christmas is busy with many activities planned throughout the month, helping to keep the residents active and engaged with others.

“There are entertainers performing during sessions for the whole month of December and Christmas music is played throughout the facility to build Christmas spirit.

“The residents have many activities to participate in, like Christmas carol sing alongs, dress ups, quizzes, movies, arts and crafts like making Christmas cards and wreaths.”

The month-long festivities lead up to a Christmas day party organised by the Activities Coordinator for residents and their families.

“It’s a lovely time for all and often a highlight for our residents, with a festive meal cooked by the Kitchen Manager and games and raffles to enjoy.”

For Razon who grew up in the Philippines, the Christmas season goes hand in hand with showing love and compassion to others.

“It’s difficult being away from family and I sometimes feel guilty not being able to take care of my parents. “But by helping vulnerable people, providing them with the best quality care they deserve and showering them with Christmas joy, this gives me the rewarding feeling I would have had in helping my own parents.”
