Samoan graduate fulfills passion for serving the community
Junior Melei has always nurtured a passion for working with children.
“My journey started back when I was employed part-time supporting troubled youth from around Auckland. My job involved using music as a pathway for them to express themselves and connect with other young people going through similar experiences.
“I later moved on to working in before-and-after school care, as well as relieving part-time in early childhood centres. A former colleague suggested I gain a teaching qualification so I could pursue a full-time career in ECE. New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) was recommended by them as the best place to achieve this.”
The three-year Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) program was Junior’s first choice, so he could challenge himself with a program that sees graduates able to apply for NZ Teacher Registration upon completion.
“Upon enrolling, the Pastoral Support Team advised that I was eligible for one of their Māori and Pasifika teaching scholarships, where fees for the first year of study are only $999.“It has been a blessing to have the opportunity to remove some financial strain, as course fees and student loans can become a real burden.”
Junior says awesome lecturers, a kind and supportive Pastoral Support Team and engaging interactions with other students through the NZTC Online learning platform have been the cornerstone for his studies with the college.
“At one point, I had an almost two-year layoff while my wife and I had our first child. Things became very frustrating and challenging, but NZTC was very helpful. I am truly thankful for the support from everyone that has played a huge part in my studying and teaching journey.”
With all the wonderful opportunities available, Junior sees himself committing to the ECE sector for a very long time.
“My ultimate goal is to open and manage a centre of my own that holds strong Christian values, as I believe this will not only benefit children, but also their families and the wider community.
“I have a passion for serving the community and working in ECE is one way of fulfilling this.”
