Reduced fees support sector’s need for qualified teachers

Early Childhood Education

New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) is helping to get skilled teachers into early childhood centres across the country with reduced fees on select undergraduate ECE programs.

From Monday 15 April, eligible domestic students can receive a reduction of up to 70% on study fees for the New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5), the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education), and one year of the Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education).

The Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) and Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE) are Initial Teacher Education programs, which give students the practical teaching experience that they need to be eligible for New Zealand teacher registration.

For the Level 5 Diploma, graduates can progress into the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) to gain that experience.

“The need for qualified kaiako in early childhood centres continues to grow and offering reduced fees on our ITE programs is one of the ways in which we support the growth of teacher education in the sector,” says NZTC’s ECE Sector Liaison, Chelsea Bracefield.

In tough financial times access to higher education can often be further out of reach.

“We aim to increase accessibility to early childhood teacher education with these reduced fee opportunities. Relieving the financial barriers for kaiako to become registered teachers supports career progression, and leads to better outcomes for tamariki, whānau and centres overall,” says Bracefield.

“We’re proud to offer globally-recognised qualifications while supporting an integral sector that nurtures and teaches our next generation.”
