Pay rise in sight for healthcare assistants
Healthcare assistants in New Zealand are set to receive one of the biggest pay rises in the country’s history.
Government recently announced that healthcare assistants working in aged care, disability services and home support in the public sector will be given a substantial pay increase this year, and it will continue to climb until 2022.
From 1 July 2017, healthcare assistants will receive a pay rise of between 15 to 49 percent, depending on qualifications and experience, with wages expected to increase up to $27 per hour in five years’ time.
New Zealand Tertiary College welcomes and supports this news that healthcare assistants are going to be better financially compensated for their important work.
The college offers three health and wellbeing programs – New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 2), New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing - Health Assistance Strand (Level 3) and New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Support) (Level 4) – with scholarship opportunities available for a limited time.
Many care facilities expect healthcare assistants to complete a New Zealand Level 2 or 3 qualification at some stage during their employment. NZTC’s Level 3 program is focused on the strong practical components of the role and person-centred care.
Healthcare assistants who want to further advance their skills and increase their job opportunities are encouraged to pursue further study options as a recent New Zealand occupation outlook report shared how work opportunities with the elderly and people with disabilities are likely to increase when qualifications are obtained beyond the Level 2 and 3 expectation.
