Jenita Karki
Jenita Karki has recently completed the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Care and Support) (Level 4) which has helped her vocation in aged and dementia care.
Originally from Nepal, Karki moved to New Zealand with her family where she worked in a hotel. Knowing she had a passion for helping people, she soon enrolled with New Zealand Tertiary College to undergo her studies in Health and Wellbeing.
“I thought NZTC would be a good choice for my studies. I prefer distance learning as it gives me the freedom to learn at my own pace.”
For Karki, her passion for healthcare started because of her close bond with her grandparents.
“I really enjoy helping and spending time with elderly people. Even though I’m far from home, working with elderly people makes me feel like I’m at home with my grandparents, who I am very attached to.”
Whilst studying at New Zealand Tertiary College, Karki worked in a dementia care role where she felt she could use her practical skills from her studies.
“The course ‘Contributing to Change’ helped me to identify areas of improvement within my workplace, positively impacting the residents and daily operations of the dementia ward.”
Throughout her work experience, diversional (recreational) therapy has been a sector Karki has been able to explore and has thoroughly enjoyed. She says, “Through diversional therapy I can deliver better healthcare and bring happiness into their lives, which gives me happiness and mental peace.”
