NZTC Symposium - Music and Movement for Early Childhood Development

Early Childhood Education News

New Zealand Tertiary College is looking forward to delivering its ninth annual symposium on Monday 11 May, focused on the importance of music and movement in early childhood education.

Featuring plenaries, practical workshops and an international keynote address, this professional development day will be of interest to all educators and carers of young children.

Dr Kate Williams, Principal Research Fellow and Associate Professor at the School of Early Childhood and Inclusive Education at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), will join us as the keynote speaker.

Her research focuses on children’s development of self-regulation and the parenting, educational, and intervention contexts that support this, along with the developmental outcomes associated with children’s self-regulatory functioning. This includes children’s regulation of sleep, attention, emotion, and behaviour.

Dr Williams’ keynote address will explore the evidence and theory related to beat synchronisation, cognitive benefits of music participation, music therapy, and early childhood music engagement to increase participants’ understanding of this approach. It will include a call to arms for all adults engaging with children, regardless of their music background, to ‘move to the beat’.

A workshop will also be hosted by Dr Williams focused on Rhythm & Movement for Self-Regulation (RAMSR).

“NZTC has been committed to supporting the early childhood sector with professional development opportunities for over 38 years. The sector understands the importance of music and movement for young children and we are looking forward to furthering this knowledge with Dr Williams’ expertise and the sharing of research amongst delegates,” said NZTC Chief Executive Selena Fox.

The Call for Presenters will be open until Monday 23 March for those interested in sharing their knowledge and research through a presentation or workshop. For more information click HERE
