From a lifelong love for children to becoming a qualified kaiako
For Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) student, Robyn Holli Davel, taking steps towards becoming a qualified teacher by pursuing studies in early childhood education has been a lifelong dream.
“I think for as long as I can remember, I have always been interested in children, child development, psychology, and specifically child education. My first word was even ‘babas’, according to mum!”
After emigrating from South Africa with her family, Davel began relieving in New Zealand ECE centres, allowing her to solidify her passion for working with young children.
She soon secured a full-time position with an early childhood centre in Prebbleton, and decided it was the perfect time to begin studies with NZTC.
“I love the flexibility and Blended Learning that NZTC provides. Through the college I’ve been able to pursue full-time employment and gain invaluable Field Practice experience, whilst studying in the evenings via NZTC Online.
“I believe I can fully attest my knowledge and success in my studies to having had the opportunity to concurrently gain experience, skills, and theory. I don’t believe I would have found such a lovely work, life and study balance anywhere else.”
Already in the second year of her studies, Davel enjoys being able to engage with peers and receive guidance from lecturers, helping to create a positive learning environment.
“I really enjoy the concept of the Discussion Forums, where you can bounce ideas and ask questions to both students and lecturers, and receive timely and detailed feedback.”
She shares how the college provided wraparound support after she was in an accident.
“In my experience, NZTC really values making your study experience as smooth as possible and genuinely cares about each student's wellbeing.
“I was in a car crash at the beginning of the year, and in the weeks following, I received phone calls from wonderful lecturers and members of the college who genuinely wanted to ensure that I was coping and had everything I needed at my disposal.”
For Davel, NZTC’s core values resonate deeply with her in her teaching practice and daily life, especially Heart – Ngākau.
“I know that I lead from the heart with my teaching, because why do anything if it is not with heart and passion. During the first weeks in New Zealand, when my whānau and I were settling in, it was the way people treated you, even in the most mundane interactions, that made all the difference.
“I firmly believe you will never know the full impact you may have on people and that people will forget what you’ve said and what you’ve done, but people will never forget the way you make them feel. This is what I strive to do in teaching.”
