Level 4 student ‘fulfilled’ by a career in healthcare

NZTC Cares

Rosemarie Deiparine found a passion for community healthcare when she moved to New Zealand.

“There’s a feeling of fulfillment once you’ve achieved your goal in assisting someone,” says the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Care and Support) (Level 4) student.

Inspired to return to study by her partner’s mother who passed away, Rosemarie chose New Zealand Tertiary College to kickstart her new career based on the cultural focus of NZTC programs, and the success and competency of alumni working in the sector.

As an ex-teacher, she appreciates how the knowledge and experience she gains through her study is improving the level of care she can offer her clients.

“Completing the Level 4 Certificate is enhancing my ability to do my job well, by helping me to understand my client’s rights, my rights as a healthcare provider, and adhering to the correct standards and procedures in client care.”

She says her favourite course – Person-Centred Care Practices – has taught her vital methods to follow in her career, from personalising interactions to providing compassionate, dignified and respectful care.

These approaches are being implemented daily in her role as a Community Support Worker, where her tasks include personal care, such as showering and dressing clients; administering medication; preparing meals; and settling clients at night.

They have varied conditions, often broken bones and fractures that require special attention.

“Community healthcare is very interesting and enjoyable to work in,” Rosemarie enthuses. “Meeting different people in the community and being able to assist them, making their lives better, is very satisfying.”

Juggling work shifts and other commitments means she doesn’t have a lot of time to study during the day, so learning through the NZTC Online platform has given her the flexibility to gain knowledge and a new qualification without sacrificing time with her family.

“If you want to achieve something and gain more knowledge of healthcare practices and the sector, studying online with the help of NZTC’s supportive lecturers and teams is the most convenient way to do that.”

NZTC are accepting applications for the January 2025 intake of the Level 4 program. Contact admissions@nztertiarycollege.ac.nz to find out more.
