Level 3 student passionate about healthcare crisis management

Health and Wellbeing

While most students work towards becoming a qualified Healthcare Assistant, April Papps is on a different journey in person-centred care.

The New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3) graduate is using the skills and knowledge gained through her studies to pursue a career in police work or healthcare chaplaincy, fulfilling a personal interest in reducing the effects of trauma and abuse in her community.

“I’m dedicated to promoting security, wellbeing and advocating for others. I’m also interested in policing and first response, and becoming a chaplain combines those interests,” she explains.

Papps’ background is varied, with years of working in the motel industry helping guests alongside her parents, and volunteering in crises such as the Christchurch earthquakes.

“I’ve learnt to stay calm and composed when things get tough. Putting myself in the shoes of others to understand their perspectives has been a lifelong practice for me, and it comes naturally because of my upbringing and personal experiences,” she says.

Her Health and Wellbeing qualification from NZTC joins ongoing study in communication, speech therapy and criminal justice.

“I chose to study with NZTC because I felt that the Level 3 program would allow me to combine my existing skills into a new pathway, in a rewarding environment.

“While some of the program content may not be what I want to pursue a career in, it’s opened my eyes to all areas of healthcare and has helped me to reconnect with my purpose and aspirations.”

She says she was encouraged to see the program included a course around caring for vulnerable clients.

“The teaching around abuse and empathy training has genuinely resonated with me, it’s inspiring to be part of a program that values such important aspects of care and advocacy.”

Papps is currently putting the knowledge she gains through her studies into practice as she cares for her elderly parents, and helps to manage the challenges that come with their ongoing health conditions.

She hopes to soon move into a role where she can put her calm head and healthcare knowledge into practice, and contribute to the care of people and society.
