Leadership learnings inspire NZTC staff and beyond

Early Childhood Education News

Ideal team players, the importance of emotional intelligence and the lenses of leadership were just some of the topics explored at the 2016 Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit.

New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) hosted video presentations featuring world renowned leaders discussing key topics for professional development and personal growth at both their Auckland and Christchurch Campuses.

The Global Leadership Summit is an annual Willow Creek Community Church initiative with an expected reach of 180,000 leaders throughout more than 125 countries in 2016.

NZTC staff, early childhood professionals and community members took part in reflections and discussions following each presentation sharing how they could implement strategies into their own leadership.

With NZTC being a global company with an office in India and qualifications offered worldwide, one talk that resonated with NZTC staff members was Erin Meyer’s presentation on the Culture Map.

Her research mapped where different cultures generally lie on the spectrum between low and high context in relation to different examples such as communicating. Low context communication is explicit, simple and clear while high context is implicit, layered and nuanced.

NZTC Program Manager (South Island) Anita Croft says she found the presentation interesting and insightful.

“It made me think of how I communicate with others and frame my feedback when marking student’s assessments. This is something I will be more aware of when communicating with both colleagues and students.”

Other innovative speakers included Willow Creek Community Church Founder and Senior Pastor Bill Hybels who spoke on the different lenses of leadership. Four pairs of glasses were used as a metaphor to illustrate the lenses of passion, people focused, performance and legacy.

More highlights included presentations by the Ford Motor Company President and Chief Executive Alan Mulally who spoke on the art of working together and bestselling author and the Table Group Founder Patrick Lencioni who presented on three essential virtues that an ideal team player must have - hungry, humble and smart.

Claire Jude from Kindercare Learning Centres attended the day and has since put together a presentation to share Alan Mulally’s insights with her team, and thanks NZTC for yet another exciting day.

“It’s always a day I look forward to and never disappoints!”
