‘Community is… what we create together.’
That’s the theme for Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW), which runs from 23-29 September 2024. Usually a time to reflect on our mental health and wellbeing, this year’s theme celebrates the relationships that are built as we navigate tough times, and their impact on our happiness.
For many NZTC students, community extends to the people who support and inspire them throughout their studies, stepping in to help balance their learning with work and family commitments.
“My children, and the children I teach, keep me going and inspire me every day to be my best self and to continue being strong. But I am only as strong as the support system I have, so I owe a lot to my family, friends, and amazingly supportive work colleagues,” shares Master of Early Childhood Education graduate Courtney Ashton.
“In today’s world being an international student is really challenging as you have to start a new life in a completely different country for the sake of your career,” says Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education) student Bhawna Gakhar.
“I am blessed to be part of my ECE centre here in New Zealand, the whole team is so helpful.”
For others, communities are created purposefully to support each other through shared experiences, like Health and Wellbeing Level 4 graduate Jayne Bryant who works to increase opportunities for connection for the neurodiverse.
“I’ve started a cooking group as I see quite a few teenagers needing to socialise in a safe space, and parents who are trying to find things for their children to do. I also help to manage a Special Olympics football team.”
No matter the reason behind the relationship, being part of a community provides a sense of whanaungatanga (connectedness and belonging) that can help to boost our mental wellbeing and increase resilience. The social and emotional support can also act as a buffer against stress, and help people to pursue and achieve personal and professional milestones.
