Home Support Worker inspired to lead
Julie Wallace was inspired to study the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Support) (Level 4) with New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) after positive encouragement from her workplace.
“I was interested in completing my Level 4 as I knew holding a higher qualification would open up opportunities for pay increases in the healthcare sector going forward. NZTC was recommended to me as an excellent place to study, with a very good student support system.”
Julie’s current role as a Home Support Worker involves assisting her clients with their daily needs, such as showering, dressing, aiding with medication, shopping and housework. Now a proud NZTC student, she is finding her studies are allowing her to grow and develop in this position.
“I found the course focused on leadership in healthcare to be extremely beneficial for the type of work that I do. It made me consider my own role, and how I can be a leader by taking the time to reflect on the new concepts I’ve learnt and implementing these in practice.”
Julie is also enjoying both the flexibility of her coursework and the level of care displayed by NZTC.
“Because I work full-time, it’s great being able to study in the evenings. Pastoral Support have gone out of their way to make sure I know they are available if things get stressful, and the lecturers work hard to ensure we understand the tasks expected, as well as providing us with a good amount of discussion material.
“Although I sometimes struggle with my research skills, or worry about whether I am on the right track with my assignments, I am able to overcome these challenges with support from the college.”
Looking ahead, Julie plans to continue providing care and support for her clients with increased confidence.
“I feel much more confident in myself knowing I have an extra level of knowledge now. I would like to see what further study is available for healthcare professionals, which will allow me to develop my learning to an even greater extent.”
