Healthcare professional shares her experiences
Nelie Pascual, a current New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Support) (Level 4) student cherishes her work in the healthcare sector, which she says is full of rewarding challenges and opportunities for valuable personal and professional growth.
“My primary role is a hospital aide for the Christchurch District Health Board, which involves assisting nursing staff in providing quality patient care. This includes maintaining a safe and clean environment within wards to promote patient wellbeing and rehabilitation, and reporting any hazards.
“I am also responsible for maintaining a level of communication with patients that is appropriate to their condition, as well as engaging in more general tasks like changing bed linen and checking stock levels for our medical consumables.”
When New Zealand began rolling out the Covid-19 vaccine and an administration position became available, Nelie jumped at the chance to undertake another meaningful role.
“I saw this as a good opportunity to expand my knowledge and skills by getting to interact with different people from various cultures.
“I help to ensure that the public’s journey through the immunisation site is smooth and without any unnecessary delays, so people feel supported and comfortable. This encompasses conversing positively with consumers and members of the immunisation team, as well as additional responsibilities such as providing relevant Covid-19 factsheets, FAQs and post-vaccine advice.”
Nelie says she feels blessed to be working in the healthcare sector – particularly during these unprecedented times.
“Interacting with others is what I enjoy most about my roles. They are opportunities for me to provide quality service and support for our community amidst nationwide challenges. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing people happy and satisfied with the care they are getting.
“As a healthcare professional, I have learnt that it is important to love what you do and always be grateful. Many people in other sectors are struggling to find work due to the pandemic, so I know I am incredibly fortunate to be doing something I am so passionate about.”
