Graduate’s journey from nanny to qualified kaiako

Early Childhood Education

While working as a nanny, Elle Bird recognised the value of early childhood education and sought relieving positions in local centres to expand her teaching horizons.

“Having a strong passion and love for children really inspired me to pursue a career in early childhood education. Soon after I began relieving at a centre, they offered me a full-time position and suggested that I gain an ECE qualification to further my teaching career.”

The flexibility of NZTC’s Blended Learning mode enabled the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) graduate to continue working full-time while acquiring practical experiences and theoretical knowledge.

She shares how her study journey with the college was marked by supportive interactions with fellow students and lecturers that helped to build a positive learning community.

“I enjoyed supporting and engaging in discussions with other students and received strong mentoring and guidance from lecturers.

“One lecturer, Chelsea Bracefield, was particularly helpful throughout my studies, and gave me some awesome advice when I was struggling with an assignment. After that we stayed in contact so I could share my successes with her.”

Bird says a highlight of her studies was the ability to integrate her Field Practice experiences into her assignments. She found value in sharing her day-to-day interactions with tamariki, supported by readings and resources provided by NZTC.

“During my Field Practice, I enjoyed going into the infants’ room to extend my knowledge and experience working with this age group. I built relationships with the children and families and loved spending quality time with them as I watched and recognised their cues and routines.”

Currently a kaiako at BestStart Silverdale, she finds immense joy in collaborating with colleagues to create respectful and reciprocal relationships that foster a sense of belonging for children and their families.

“Being filled with their hugs, smiles and laughter throughout the day truly warms my heart, and is so rewarding and enjoyable. Watching them grow and reach their precious milestones is such an honour.”

She looks forward to obtaining full teacher registration and pursuing professional development courses that enhance her leadership skills, getting her closer to fulfilling her dream of becoming a head teacher.

She offers some advice for aspiring kaiako.

“Being an ECE teacher is inspiring, fun and extremely rewarding as you are creating stepping stones to guide the next generation through their early years, setting them up for success. Studying through NZTC will allow for a seamless balance between work and education.”
