Financial pressure alleviated for scholarship recipients

Early Childhood Education News

Abigail Dohare will begin her career in early childhood education stress free.

The high school leaver has taken advantage of a scholarship opportunity offered by New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) and will begin her Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) without a student loan.

“It has helped ease some of the pressure and stress of paying for my first year of study. This is a great opportunity for anyone who has recently finished high school and needs a way to begin their studies without having to worry about paying a student loan,” said Abigail.

Even before beginning her qualification, Abigail had a special insight into the ECE profession. Her mother is an early childhood teacher and watching her inspire the youngest generation of learners has motivated her to pursue the same career path.

“Watching Mum and her colleagues encourage their students to try new things and their interactions with the children has motivated me to do the same. The funny and interesting stories that Mum tells has provided more inspiration to work with young children and the rewards sound worthwhile.”

Abigail is looking forward to learning early childhood education theories such as integrating play and learning, as well as developing a deeper knowledge of New Zealand history, and developing strategies to help children with their behaviour.

“The most challenging thing might be dealing with children who don’t listen to the teachers. I want to learn how to handle a situation and how to deal with a child’s behaviour.”

The aspiring teacher wants to use her qualification to travel and work overseas, sharing her knowledge and newfound skills.

The School Leavers Scholarship is available to domestic students who commence their study by February 27 2017.

Recipients pay only $1500 towards their initial year of a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education), Certificate in Early Childhood Teaching (Level 6) or Certificate in Early Childhood Education (Level 5).
