ECE scholarship turns student’s teaching goals into reality

Early Childhood Education

After teaching English to preschoolers in China for six years, Fuilupe (Lulu) La'akulu was inspired to return home to New Zealand to further her education in the early childhood field.

“My goal was to gain a formal qualification as I knew this would open up wonderful opportunities for me, and I was excited to do this in New Zealand where the early childhood curriculum is highly regarded.”

When Lulu heard about NZTC’s ECE study scholarships, she jumped at the opportunity to enrol with the college and kick-start her educational journey.

“I was working as a relief teacher in Auckland, when a few friends told me about NZTC’s wonderful scholarships.

“I applied and am currently studying the first year of the Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) for only $999. Studying is expensive, so the scholarship has been an absolute blessing and has really motivated me to make the most of this opportunity and give it my all.”

Now teaching full-time, Lulu’s qualification fills her with passion and inspiration.

“I find it so exciting when I learn new concepts through my studies, which I then get to apply in everyday practice. I’m gaining newfound skills and knowledge that I didn’t have when working with children in China.

“It is so rewarding to know that each time a child learns something new or overcomes an obstacle, I’ve helped them do this through the valuable skills I’m developing within my studies.”

Exciting possibilities now lie ahead for Lulu.

“Once I complete my qualification, I will be eligible to apply for New Zealand Teacher Registration. This opens up a realm of opportunities, as there are so many amazing career paths available in early childhood, with lots of room for progression.

“I am considering pursuing a postgraduate qualification with NZTC when I finish my undergraduate studies, as I would love to one day hold a management position such as Head Teacher.”
