ECE scholarship supports teacher registration aspirations
Following a diverse career history, Diane Cornelius decided it was the right time to embark on her journey towards becoming a qualified teacher back in 2020.
“Having studied both social sciences and personnel management, I initially worked in human resources for 10 years. When I had my first child however, I was inspired to become an in-home educator which was very different to the corporate life I was used to!
“Now for the past 15 years I’ve been the owner of a small Montessori preschool in Auckland, working largely in a management capacity. Last year I became increasingly interested in developing my knowledge, skills and competencies as a teacher, having spent a long time focused on the operational side of preschool life.”
As a busy mother of four school-aged children, Diane was drawn to New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC)’s flexible programs which offer a blend of theoretical and practical learning. Upon enrolling, she was thrilled to discover that she was eligible for a study scholarship, which would allow her to complete the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE) for only $1,899.00.
“Over the years I have delayed pursuing study because of financial considerations. This scholarship has been an absolute blessing as it has allowed me to upskill and grow as an ECE professional without the stress of high course fees.
“I knew the Graduate Diploma would allow me to achieve my teaching aspirations while still being able to juggle the responsibilities that come with running a busy centre. NZTC’s convenient online learning is working really well for me and I am effectively balancing my education with both home life and work.”
Studying has since awoken a desire within Diane to continue growing and learning, both personally and professionally.
“My immediate goal after completing my studies will be to apply for NZ Teacher Registration, which I believe will help to strengthen my practice and support me to become the best kaiako I can be.”
