ECE reduced fees support student’s professional growth
Despite having experience in the ECE sector and a background as a nanny, Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) student, Brittany Saltmarsh’s decision to pursue a teaching qualification was an easy one.
Aware of the professional advantages gaining a degree offers, and with dreams to open her own ECE centre in the future, Saltmarsh was drawn to NZTC’s reduced fees to help kick-start her career.
“The discounted fees were a major influence for me to take that step and start studying. Although I’m working as an unqualified teacher, I’m keen to gain the knowledge and skills to help me become a more well-rounded kaiako.
“There are more opportunities that come with having a degree, like becoming a room leader or centre manager, and some centres only hire qualified teachers. In my mind, the more knowledge, the better!”
Although at the beginning of the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) program, Saltmarsh is already enjoying putting into practice key learnings from her studies at her current workplace, Summerfield Early Learning Centre in Auckland.
“I didn’t think I would learn much more than I already knew to be honest. But when the reduced fees came out, I decided to take the plunge and give it a try, and I’m glad I did as you learn so much more through studying.
“The balance between theory and practical is great. I’m gaining a solid understanding of Te Whāriki and ‘Our Code, Our Standards’ which has helped me to think differently and ensure our tamariki get better learning outcomes.”
Being able to work full-time while studying via NZTC’s Blended Learning mode is a huge plus for the busy student.
“I’m so grateful for this opportunity. Everyone is supportive and the discussion forums make you feel part of a community. There is access to a range of excellent resources, including Google Scholar, EBSCO and the library catalogue.”
After completing her degree in 2026, Saltmarsh will be eligible to apply for NZ teacher registration, bringing her one step closer to her dream of having her own ECE centre.
For now, she is enjoying every moment working alongside young children.
"I’ve had a passion for teaching children since I was one myself, and I enjoy the relationships I get to build alongside tamariki and their whānau. Watching children blossom into people who are ready to take on the world is just awesome.”
