Uma Mapagunarathne became determined to realise her dream of becoming a teacher in 2019. Following a path of self-discovery, enrichment and perseverance, she emerged on the other side in a place she did not expect. Not only did Uma become a teacher, but today she holds two diplomas, one degree, one postgraduate diploma and NZ teacher registration. But Uma is not done. She is now working towards her NZTC Master of Early Childhood Education, with plans to graduate in 2025.

Born in Sri Lanka, Uma first pursued a job as an Accounts Executive before moving to New Zealand in 2014, where she started on her path towards becoming a qualified ECE professional. After becoming a mum, Uma started working as a reliever at the Happy Feet centre, and began looking for courses she could take to earn teacher registration, which she found at NZTC.

“Starting at NZTC felt like the ideal first step toward my goal of becoming a registered teacher,” says Uma. “[It] was highly recommended by my aunt, who studied there, and I was drawn to their flexible online learning options, which allowed me to study while balancing family responsibilities.”

Beginning with the New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5), chosen for its strong foundation in early childhood education principles and practices, Uma says it “allowed me to develop the skills and knowledge needed to support young children's learning and development effectively.” She was particularly impressed by how the program blended practical learning with theoretical insights, preparing her to step confidently into an early childhood role with an understanding of the core principles of early childhood education.

After graduating, Uma was eager to take the next step towards becoming a registered teacher and enrolled in the New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 6). This qualification taught Uma to connect theory to real-world situations, boosting her confidence to make challenging ideas accessible and engaging for young learners.

Further invigorated to pursue her love of teaching, Uma continued on to study the Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education). “This qualification was vital for achieving my goal of teacher registration,” she says, it also equipped her with the skills to effectively support children's learning and development.

After completing two diplomas and a degree, Uma felt accomplished but still eager to continue her education. When updates surrounding pay parity in ECE changed, she saw an opportunity to further enhance her skills and boost her career. She enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (ECE), which deepened her academic understanding and gave her advanced insights into early childhood theories, research and teaching practices.

Now, Uma is nearing the completion of a Master of Early Childhood Education, a milestone that excites her. Supported by her husband, parents, friends and her centre manager, she has found encouragement and motivation to push forward.

“What I look forward to most about this qualification is the chance to engage with complex ideas, connect with like-minded professionals, and contribute to meaningful changes in early childhood education,” she says. Uma eventually wants to work in special needs education, creating a supportive environment where all children, regardless of their abilities, feel valued and empowered in the classroom.

Reflecting on her journey, Uma is incredibly happy with how things have worked out. She received her teacher registration in 2023, increased her wealth of knowledge and is thriving in her dream career. Uma has also benefitted from pay parity with each qualification she has received, stating “achieving pay parity not only acknowledges my qualifications but also supports my commitment to providing high-quality education and care to the children I work with.”

NZTC’s online learning and flexibility have been key to Uma’s success, allowing her to balance her academic and professional career while also balancing family time. She particularly likes how each lecturer built a friendly and motivating atmosphere for students despite the theoretical learning being undertaken online. “

They were responsive and provided valuable feedback and guidance through the NZTC Online platform, which helped me feel connected and supported throughout my studies.”

Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, a love of learning and a dedication to making a positive difference in children’s lives.

If you’re interested in studying a program that leads to NZ teacher registration, NZTC is currently offering significantly reduced study fees for a limited time.
