Creating a home for international students
International Student Ambassador Stephanie Li transitioned from a career in supply chain management to early childhood education and hasn’t looked back since. After moving to New Zealand several years ago, Li has completed her ECE studies with NZTC and now shares her positive study experience with prospective students keen to learn more about the college.
After first visiting New Zealand in 2019 on a family holiday, Li was captivated by the country’s natural beauty and warm hospitality and decided it was the perfect place to pursue her passion for early childhood education.
Li knew NZTC was the right choice for her after a friend recommended it for its balance between personal life and academic commitments. This was very important as Li has a 10-year-old son, and she needed to work while studying.
“NZTC is renowned for its excellence in early childhood education in New Zealand,” says Li, “and I have always been passionate about education and enjoy being around children.”
Her role as an international student ambassador came from the desire to support others.
“I want to help people who may have the same questions and concerns I did before I started studying with NZTC,” explains Li. “I want to give my honest suggestions and feedback to them.”
Her favourite part of the role is being able to help others. A standout interaction for her came when she shared her own experiences in finding a job after graduating with a prospective student.
“I shared my personal experiences to help her understand the key characteristics needed to be a competitive job seeker after graduation,” remembers Li. “She was happy after our conversation.”
Li believes the International Student Ambassador program plays a vital role in building a sense of community at NZTC.
“Interacting with people from diverse backgrounds has improved my cultural competence, making me more effective in multicultural environments,” she says.
“The experience has boosted my confidence and refined my communication skills, both of which are essential for professional success. Overall, this role has not only clarified my career aspirations but also equipped me with the skills and experiences needed to achieve them.”
