When Qing Zhao was looking to pursue an early childhood education qualification outside China, a friend who had studied at NZTC suggested the college.

“He acquired an in-depth knowledge of the development of children, as well as a detailed understanding of New Zealand’s early childhood curriculum (Te Whāriki) as a result of his studies.

His experience enabled me to observe the meticulous teaching and practicum opportunities at NZTC, which facilitate students’ integration into the early childhood education sector of New Zealand,” she shares.

However, it was the flexibility of NZTC’s online learning that led her to enrol in a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education).

She appreciates being able to learn at her own pace and around her daughter’s needs.

Reflecting on her own experience studying at the college, Zhao says her favourite course was Tiriti-Based Early Childhood Education. The course gave her a better understanding of New Zealand’s Treaty of Waitangi and the knowledge to implement the principles of the Treaty in her daily life and teaching practice.

“Each course is structured in a way that is easily understandable and includes readings to help students comprehend the course material. This is particularly beneficial for people who have not previously encountered early childhood education,” she explains.

“The 16-hour field experience per week is also reasonable, and I can negotiate the schedule with the centre. This adaptability is particularly considerate of mothers who need to balance academic pursuits with family responsibilities."

When she’s not studying, Zhao plays tennis, hikes, swims, and “embraces the beautiful weather in New Zealand”. She also enjoys attending lectures and participating in community events to increase her understanding of New Zealand and the education system.
