Celebrating NZTC Vision, Heart, Competence and Spirit

Early Childhood Education Health and Wellbeing

In long-standing college tradition, NZTC dedicates the month of August to shining a spotlight on its treasured values of Vision, Heart, Competence and Spirit

These four values serve as the foundation for the college's mission statement, and both students and staff are encouraged to incorporate them into their daily practice.

Values Month offers an opportunity to reflect on how these values are alive within the college community, guiding the journey of teaching, caring, supporting and learning.

Health and Wellbeing Level 2 student, Jennifer Skinner, shares why NZTC’s value of Heart – Ngākau, resonates deeply with her.

“I believe that having a compassionate Heart is the most essential quality when engaging with others. It’s about recognising that each individual carries their own set of beliefs, values and life experiences that have shaped them into the person they are today.

“It’s crucial to acknowledge that everyone, regardless of their background, craves love, affection and appreciation for simply being themselves.”

For Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE) graduate and Infant Team Leader, Riya Guha Ajay, it is NZTC’s value of Competence – Poutama, that acts as a guiding force in her teaching practice.

“This value reflects NZTC’s dedication to increasing Competence and confidence, enabling students to make a positive difference through care, education, professional service and a commitment to excellence.

“It resonates with me because I strongly believe in continuously striving for personal and professional growth. By continually enhancing our Competence, we can provide the best possible care and education to children and contribute to their holistic development.”

NZTC Chief Executive, Selena Fox, reflects on how each value is inextricably linked and extends her heartfelt thanks to the entire NZTC community for their unwavering dedication to the college's values and serving their respective sectors.

“Thank you for embodying Vision and inspiring all those you work alongside each day. Vision takes care and education to the next deserved level. Thank you for sharing your Heart, your Heart for learning, your Heart for those you are caring for and educating, and your Heart for making a difference.

“Thank you for nurturing your Competence. We need to be lifelong learners, open to new and evolving research to inform our practice. And thank you for touching the lives of those you serve with your precious Spirit. It’s this Spirit of love and care that children, families and clients will remember long after their moments with you become yesterdays.”
