Big aspirations for bright Health and Wellbeing student
Currently a second-year biomedical science student, Olivia Loveday decided to study the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3) with New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) so she could gain formal experience in the healthcare sector.
“I am planning to enrol in a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program in 2022, so I wanted to gain a qualification that would provide me with the knowledge needed to undergo valuable work experience as a healthcare assistant in a hospital, and therefore better my application.”
Olivia was inspired to enter the medical field after facing her own health challenges as a teenager.
“In my final year of high school I fell ill and was admitted to hospital. It took 18 months before I was finally diagnosed with a chronic illness.
“This experience of being a patient has pushed me towards pursuing a career in health so I am able to advocate for individuals like myself.”
Olivia is finding the user-friendly NZTC Online learning platform to be easy and efficient to navigate.
“Studying with NZTC Online has been a great experience so far. It is simple to access and it is wonderful being able to connect with staff and fellow students.
“The college also has such fantastic course flexibility, meaning I can complete my Health and Wellbeing qualification whilst also pursuing my university bachelor’s degree.”
Olivia is impressed with NZTC’s extensive student support system, where the college is dedicated to supporting students to achieve their study requirements, while many balance busy schedules or their own personal challenges.
“When I explained my own health condition and the possible disruptions to study that it may cause, the staff were very understanding and walked me through how we could overcome these disruptions if they should occur. It is very reassuring to have a team looking after you that truly want to see you succeed.”
