Academic Excellence Award winner’s harmony of work, study and family
For Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) graduate, Casey Scarlett, a strong desire to impact the next generation served as the driving force behind her career choice.
“Making a difference in children’s lives inspired me to pursue studies in early childhood education. It’s such a fulfilling career with many opportunities to influence future generations.”
Currently a teacher at an ECE centre in Christchurch, Scarlett reflects on the dynamic nature of each day, keeping her role both challenging and rewarding.
“My favourite part of working with young children is the wonder, curiosity and joy that I see as they learn and discover. Every day is so different and exciting with tamariki, and you never know what the next day will bring.”
Studying through NZTC’s Blended Learning mode, the mother of six found a harmonious balance between work, study and spending quality time with family, thanks to the flexibility offered.
Reflecting on her academic journey, Scarlett emphasises the pivotal role played by the college’s support system.
“To begin with, I was unsure, but with the many emails, phone calls, and lecturer guidance, I was reassured that the support was always there when needed.
“Throughout my studies, I received fantastic support from the range of services NZTC offers, and in the case they could not help me, they always pointed me in the right direction.”
Recently honoured with NZTC’s Academic Excellence Award, Scarlett’s achievement, based on the highest grades in her cohort, stands as a testament to her dedication to her studies.
She credits the award to the consistent guidance she received from all those who supported her along the way.
“To be awarded the Academic Excellence Award means the world to me and I owe this honour to those who stood by me throughout my study journey.
“Juggling study and work alongside raising six children wouldn’t have been possible without the invaluable support from those around me.”
