Te Autiti Gilsenan
New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3)
Te Autiti Gilsenan is proud to be working in the healthcare sector after completing her Level 3 studies online.
Name: Te Autiti Gilsenan
Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3)
As a distance learner, Te Autiti Gilsenan drew on her love of learning to keep motivated while completing her online studies.
Having previously worked in the trades industry, she wanted to build a new, rewarding career and chose New Zealand Tertiary College for the healthcare courses on offer – specifically the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3).
“I wanted a career in an area that motivates me, that I’m passionate about, and that is people-oriented. NZTC was convenient and accessible for me as an extramural student, and offered specific courses other tertiary institutions in my area did not.”
The blend of practical work in a healthcare setting during her online studies suited Te Autiti perfectly, who prefers to learn information and concepts through “engaging” hands-on work.
“But the courses on NZTC Online are set up to be interactive and there is a lot of room for discussion in the forums, so you never feel left in the dark which can be likely to happen if you’re learning online,” she says.
Te Autiti is now spending her days in her first full-time healthcare role, employed with the Laura Ferguson Trust as a Support Worker.
“I would define my job as a bit of everything – from caregiving and health assistance to rehabilitation and support work all in one. Working in healthcare is challenging and fulfilling at the same time. Every day is different, which I love.”
We asked for her advice for students studying online, or considering an online study program:
Any tips for other students studying online?
Staring at a screen for a long period of time can be brain numbing. Give your eyes a rest and take a break! But whatever works for you as long as you have a balance between study and personal life. Things will be a breeze!
What was your favourite course in the Level 3 program?
The course ‘Culturally Appropriate and Safe Care’ was one I favoured because of its importance. Cultivating cultural awareness and understanding patients’ customs, beliefs, and values enhances communication and fosters trust. By truly seeing and hearing our clients for who they are, we create a more inclusive and effective healthcare experience.
Any future study plans?
I plan to continue on to the next level of learning in Health and Wellbeing, particularly Advanced Care (Level 4).
