Reshma Paranjpe
Reshma’s job as a healthcare assistant adds meaning to her own life, as well as the lives of others.
Name: Reshma Paranjpe
Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing - Health Assistance Strand (Level 3)
After moving to Cambridge, Reshma Paranjpe decided she wanted to make a difference to the lives of the elderly. It was this decision that led her to complete a New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3) with New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC).
“When I walk into work it feels as though I’m entering my second home. My role not only makes a difference in other people’s lives, but gives meaning to mine as well. It’s amazing being able to connect with the residents and share my happiness with them,” she says.
Reshma decided to enrol with NZTC to gain a more comprehensive understanding of her role.
“I wanted to get a proper education that would encourage me and teach me new skills. It’s good to understand the dos and don’ts when working with the elderly.
“One area I’ve been learning about is dementia. It’s been extremely helpful for me to learn about triggers and how to handle various situations with particular residents.
“For example, one resident with dementia feels like she is being left out if I talk to a colleague in front of her, and can become difficult. Through my assessments I’ve learnt different ways to handle this, such as including her in the conversation. We ask her opinion, and share laughter with her. It means she’s not violent, there are no triggers, and she feels as though she is having a nice conversation.”
Reshma is impressed with the level of support she has received from the college.
“Every time I call my lecturers they give me really good advice. It’s always lovely talking to them and they are so helpful.”
Reshma is encouraging of anyone looking to undertake study with NZTC.
“I have had a fantastic journey with NZTC and I would suggest to friends and colleagues to also take the plunge and enrol. I don’t think I’ve seen this level of support anywhere else; I’ve never had any doubts about my study.”
Reshma now plans to complete her Level 4 qualification, again remotely.
“I’m thoroughly looking forward to it! As a housewife and mother to a seven-year-old, I know this course will suit my lifestyle perfectly.”
