Muyhour Do aims to use her knowledge and experience to provide the best support possible.

Name: Muyhour Do

Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3)

Originally working as a receptionist in her home country of Cambodia, Muyhour Do chose to move to New Zealand and complete the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3) qualification with New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) as she was interested in working with the elderly.

“Since living in New Zealand I have been volunteering at a rest home, and have found the experience to be extremely rewarding. I’ve noticed that some residents feel lonely and depressed when they don’t receive many visitors, but through my role I’ve been able to spend time with them and encourage and support them. We tell jokes and stories and I enjoy hearing about their life experiences.

“Seeing the difference in their happiness is wonderful, and I feel proud of myself knowing that I’m having a positive impact on their lives.”

Muyhour was first introduced to NZTC when she chanced upon a course advertisement on Facebook.

“Based on the good feedback I read online and the flexible online course availability, I decided to enrol with the college.

“The course material and study tools are amazing and the NZTC team is very helpful. Whenever I had questions about the course I sent my lecturer a message or posted my question on the discussion forum and would always receive the support I needed.”

Muyhour has found that her NZTC qualification has taught her important skills to manage difficult situations.

“My Level 3 qualification has certainly helped me a lot. For instance, one of my clients has dementia and she sometimes makes unexpected noises. I was often unsure as to whether she was requiring my attention or perhaps not feeling well, which I found quite frustrating.

“With the knowledge gained through my studies however, I have learnt ways to overcome this and effectively communicate with my clients.”

Muyhour encourages anyone with an interest in healthcare to complete a qualification with NZTC.

“Holding a health and wellbeing qualification, as well as gaining important practical experience in the sector, will set you up to become an effective healthcare assistant.

“The next step for me is to complete my Level 4 qualification, and to continue using my knowledge and experience to provide my clients with the best support possible.”
