Mosese Tava Taufa
Level 3 graduate is making a meaningful difference in his community through a new career in person-centred care.
Name: Mosese Tava Taufa
Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3)
Mosese Tava Taufa is beginning a brand-new career in healthcare, and he couldn’t be happier.
Ready to hang up the high-vis after working at a plastic factory, Mosese decided to complete a New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3) after his wife’s “dedication and compassion for her patients” as a healthcare assistant motivated him to enter the sector.
“My wife has been my greatest inspiration. She has shown me the importance of empathy and patience in this profession,” he says.
Because he was still working in his engineering role while pursuing Level 3 studies, New Zealand Tertiary College was an easy choice as a provider. The flexibility of online learning allowed him to follow his dream and study healthcare, while juggling personal and work commitments.
Now, he’s eager to put his knowledge into practice and take the first step on his new career path.
“I’m excited to transition into my new role as a Healthcare Assistant at a hospital, where I will be able to provide direct patient care, assist with daily activities, and support the healthcare team in making a positive impact on patients’ lives.”
Mosese is already looking ahead to the future, with plans to pursue further education in healthcare or social work.
“I want to deepen my knowledge and skills to provide even better support to those in need, and make a lasting impact in the community.”
He shares more on how his study experience is helping him achieve that:
How do you like to learn?
I enjoy learning through assessments and scenarios, as they challenge me to think critically and apply my knowledge in relevant contexts. Completing the Level 3 Certificate in Health and Wellbeing at NZTC allowed me to engage deeply with the material, analyse different situations, and develop problem-solving skills. I appreciate the opportunity to reflect on various scenarios, which helps me understand concepts better and prepares me for real-world applications in the field.
What was your favourite course?
My favourite course was ‘Person-Centred Care’. One of my key takeaways was the importance of holistic care, which emphasises treating the whole person (mind, body and spirit) rather than just addressing specific symptoms. This perspective has profoundly influenced my care approach.
What area of healthcare interests you the most?
I have a strong interest in elderly care. In my spare time, I enjoy volunteering at a local community centre, where I help organise activities for seniors. I believe that providing support and companionship to older adults is vital, as they often face isolation and health challenges. I want to contribute to enhancing their quality of life and ensuring they receive the care and respect they deserve.
