Health and Wellbeing Profiles

Mariaeliza Ingeniero feels the healthcare sector is becoming one of the best industries to work in.

Name: Mariaeliza Ingeniero

Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3)

Growing up in the Philippines, Mariaeliza Ingeniero was taught the value of caring for the elderly.

“As a young child, I saw how naturally my family members looked after our grandparents. I enjoyed helping out too and realised I would also like to support others in this way.”

Originally working as an unqualified Healthcare Assistant in a retirement village setting, Mariaeliza sought advice from her manager after reading about the important of upskilling.

“She suggested that I enrol with New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) and when doing some research of my own, I really liked their values and beliefs which include supporting students to care and serve meaningfully and effectively.”

Now a graduate of the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3) and currently partway through the Level 4 program, Mariaeliza says her studies have allowed her to grow and develop as a healthcare professional.

“I have learnt advanced strategies and techniques to improve client care and make better decisions. My courses have provided many relevant resources which have supported me with identifying problems and proposing solutions to improve my practice.

“In addition, by learning online I have been able to keep studying throughout the pandemic, meaning that my learning is never disrupted when lockdowns or restrictions arise. Currently, I am working full-time up to 110 hours a fortnight, so the flexibility of my program allows me to fit my study around a very busy schedule.”

For Mariaeliza, healthcare is one of the most fulfilling, honourable and pleasurable industries to work in, with added benefits for those who pursue formal qualifications.

“Furthering my career in healthcare through study makes me an asset to the facility I work for and it also comes with a pay rise.

“I have the opportunity to be compassionate, empathetic and kind, while making a living. With increasing job stability, potential for salary increases and low unemployment rates, the sector is becoming one of the best to work in – especially during these Covid times.”
