Julia Hoermann encourages others to begin a career in healthcare with an “open mind and a kind soul”.
Name: Julia Hoermann
Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 2)
Previously working as an audiologist selling hearing aids, Julia Hoermann was keen for a career that involved caring for people without the stress of reaching sales quotas.
“I wanted to have a job where I could help others without feeling pressure from above to sell as much as possible. In a lot of jobs where you get to help people, there is nevertheless a financial aspect in one way or another.”
Now a Community Support Worker, the Level 2 graduate finds great reward in caring for her client with cerebral palsy and enjoys the variety in her role.
“Depending on the shift I have that day, I help my client get ready, make him meals, drive him in his mobility van to appointments or wherever else he wants to go, help him with toileting and keep the house clean.
“I feel like I’m truly appreciated and that my work is having a positive impact on my client’s life.”
During her course, Hoermann found NZTC Online a great way to collaborate with other students and lecturers.
“I enjoyed the discussions feature, where students could ask questions, share their thoughts on the courses and get advice from the lecturers.
“I also enjoyed the clarity of the online study platform. It was very easy and intuitive to use. The courses themselves were a good length, containing all the information I needed without overwhelming me.”
With a shortage of skilled healthcare professionals in New Zealand, she encourages others to take the opportunity to upskill by enrolling in a Health and Wellbeing program.
“Healthcare providers are desperate for Support Workers and they will support you in getting your qualifications, and to start you will need nothing but an open mind and a kind soul.
“I want to thank NZTC for supporting me throughout my studies. This positive learning experience has really encouraged me to pursue further qualifications in the future.”
