New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Care and Support) (Level 4) graduate, Jen Watts, finds great satisfaction in caring for others.

Name: Jen Watts

Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Care and Support) (Level 4)

When Jen Watts was looking for a tertiary provider to pursue study in healthcare, it was her previous experience as an NZTC Associate Teacher, mentoring early childhood student teachers, that drew her back to the college – this time as a Health and Wellbeing student.

“NZTC has a reputable name as a tertiary provider for both Early Childhood Education and Health and Wellbeing programs.

“As a qualified and registered ECE teacher I had mentored student teachers studying through NZTC, and I was always impressed with the level of support given by the tutors and I saw how well set up the online learning platform was. This helped me choose NZTC for both Level 3 and 4 Health and Wellbeing programs.”

The flexible study mode suited Watts who says she was able to successfully juggle hobbies, family and work commitments.

“I could learn at my own pace and I really enjoyed how organised all the information was. I could find everything I needed quickly and the information was written concisely and clearly so I could understand it well.

“The online discussions that were held with the lecturer and my fellow students helped me gain insight and advice for assessment tips and helped broaden my thinking.”

Currently working as a Community Options Specialist for a non-profit organisation, Watts is enjoying helping people with disabilities achieve their goals and engage with their community.

“I’ve always found that helping people has given me great satisfaction and brought me happiness. My passion currently is supporting people with physical and intellectual disabilities, and ensuring they are thriving as part of the community and living their lives to the fullest.”

She says her studies have increased her confidence and helped her grow into a leader.

“I feel I have grown from being a ‘newbie’ to now being one of the leaders in my workplace. The learning from this course has given me confidence and skills to be able to create support plans and provide person-centred care for the people I work for.”

Looking ahead, she is keen to further develop her skills and learning in the disability and healthcare field and will likely enrol in study at the diploma level.

For those also thinking of a career change, the healthcare professional shares some advice.

“I urge anyone who has a big heart for caring and supporting people to do this program and pursue a career in healthcare. It’s a stable and supportive industry where there is plenty of work available and lots of options for you to progress career wise.

“I recommend NZTC as a fantastic tertiary provider who will ensure you have every resource you need at your fingertips to help you succeed and complete your qualification.”
