Jaheli Nakihid
Working in a rest home facility, Jaheli Nakihid was inspired to pursue studies to provide the best possible care for her clients.
Name: Jaheli Nakihid
Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 2)
Jaheli Nakihid’s journey towards becoming a Healthcare Assistant began with a deeply personal inspiration – her mother.
“I used to take care of my mum back in the Philippines, and I felt a great sense of fulfilment in helping with her care until she passed away.
“This left an indelible mark on me and led me to embark on a career in healthcare, with a strong motivation to help others, especially those in nursing homes. To this day, every time I’m caring for clients, they remind me of my mum.”
Recognising the importance of acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills to provide quality care to her clients, Nakihid enrolled in NZTC’s New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 2).
“I chose to study with NZTC because of their highly rated Health and Wellbeing qualifications. Their program really helped me develop my knowledge in providing client care according to personalised care plans.”
Reflecting on her favourite course, ‘Culturally Sensitive and Safe Care’, she highlights the importance of bringing cultural awareness to her role as a Healthcare Assistant working in a rest home.
“This understanding has been instrumental in building meaningful relationships with my clients. By fostering mutual respect and understanding, I strive to create an atmosphere of trust and empathy that enhances the overall quality of care.”
Nakihid says NZTC’s wraparound student support has played a significant role in her success, and is grateful for the guidance offered by lecturers throughout her academic journey.
As a mother herself, Nakihid understands the challenges and doubts that others may face when contemplating study. She encourages everyone, especially mothers, not to let age or parental responsibilities hinder their aspirations.
“Not all mums want to pursue their dreams because they already have kids. Some of them are shy to study because they think they are too old. But I encourage everyone to continue pursuing their dreams.
“My goal in life is to work for my family, to give them a better life, and to keep learning to become the best possible health professional for my clients.”
