Level 4 graduate, Destiny Harema, shares how “knowledge is power”.

Name: Destiny Harema

Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Care and Support) (Level 4)

For Support Worker, Destiny Harema, providing care for the elderly in her community is deeply fulfilling.

“To be able to give back to those that really need it and want help is my biggest motivator and what I truly love about working in healthcare.

“I get comfort from knowing I've done my part in this world by spreading the kindness and respect that everyone deserves.”

The Level 4 graduate was initially drawn to a career as a Support Worker after caring for her sick grandmother.

“When my great nana was diagnosed with lung cancer I started to help her more around the house as the treatment and radiation made her weak and prone to falls. When she passed, I felt a void and knew I had a knack for helping others.”

Currently a Support Worker for VisionWest Home Healthcare, Harema provides in-home care for the disabled and elderly, supporting them in maintaining their independence.

She was recommended NZTC by her trainer at VisionWest, and says her studies have greatly enhanced her everyday work, allowing her a deeper understanding of best practices and legal considerations.

“Studying has allowed me to grow my knowledge and excel in my role. Knowledge is power and with a greater understanding, I can now go further in my workplace, helping people with more complex impairments.”

For those considering a career in healthcare, Destiny offers some valuable advice.

“Take a moment to think to yourself, ‘That’s gonna be me one day’, and treat clients how you would want someone to treat you. If things get awkward, everyone loves a bit of humour but be mindful of how it comes across. Above all, show kindness and smile – some clients don’t get that in their everyday lives.

“And as the saying goes, if you find a job you enjoy doing, you will never work a day in your life.”

Harema is confident that her NZTC studies have laid the foundation for her future aspirations in the healthcare field, and she envisions becoming a midwife, psychologist or physical therapist.
