Ashleigh McMahon’s 12-Year Journey in Aged Care
New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Support) (Level 4).
Losing a much-loved grandparent back in 2012 inspired Ashleigh McMahon to leave her job as a nanny and pursue a more meaningful path in aged care.
“I saw a few things during the time my nana was in care that I believed needed to change. I felt I could make a positive contribution to the sector by providing a high standard of care that I knew the elderly deserved.”
When a position at a retirement village became available, Ashleigh applied—and twelve years later, she’s still there, thriving and leading.
“I started out as a Healthcare Assistant, but over time I’ve grown into a leadership role. I went on to study Diversional Therapy, qualified, and I’m now in charge of my department. It’s been an incredible journey.”
Inspired by colleagues who were upskilling through New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC), Ashleigh enrolled in the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Support) (Level 4).
Her studies didn’t just benefit her career—they also made a lasting impression at home.
“Achieving Level 4 allowed me to role model time management, structure, and routine to my daughters. They loved seeing their mum receive her own special certificate for the fridge!”
Ashleigh’s qualification opened the door to a new role as Diversional Therapy Coordinator, where she now leads recreational programming for residents.
“Being able to combine my passion for care with my creativity fills me with joy. It’s motivated me to consider further study in this field.
Reflecting on her journey, Ashleigh says her studies have deepened her confidence and shaped her personal philosophy around care.
“I’ve enjoyed growing along the way and discovering who I am—not just as a professional, but as a person. I’m proud of the standard of care I provide and the reputation I’ve built.”
Ashleigh’s path from nanny to department leader reflects years of learning, and commitment. She continues to make a real difference—combining her skills, creativity, and compassion to enrich the lives of those in her care.
