Anjali Elias
Anjali Elias shares her inspiration for pursuing a career in healthcare and how her Level 3 studies are helping her succeed.
Name: Anjali Elias
Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3)
Anjali Elias has always been passionate about making a positive impact on people’s lives.
Inspired by her husband who works in the disability sector, and who provided unwavering guidance and support, Anjali made the decision to leave her teaching career and follow a new path into healthcare.
She enrolled in the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3) soon after, choosing NZTC for the student support and their reputation for producing graduates who are well-prepared for the industry.
“The college’s commitment to innovation in education and its inclusive learning environment were also significant factors that attracted me.”
NZTC’s flexible online learning platform became valuable for managing her studies around other commitments, including a new role as a Support Worker in the industry.
Anjali is determined to continue her new journey in healthcare and plans to expand her skills and knowledge through professional development, further study, mentorship from industry leaders, and by taking on new challenges within the healthcare sector.

What was your favourite course?
My favourite course was ‘The Ethical and Professional Healthcare Assistant’. One piece of knowledge from that course that has stuck with me is the importance of maintaining patient confidentiality and ethical standards in all aspects of healthcare. This course emphasised the critical role of trust and integrity in patient care, highlighting how ethical decision-making and professionalism contribute to positive patient outcomes and overall healthcare quality.
What does a day in your job look like?
A typical day in my role as a support worker involves various tasks and responsibilities centred around assisting clients with their daily activities and ensuring their wellbeing – from personal care, meal preparation and household tasks to documentation, maintaining open communication with other healthcare professionals, encouraging social interaction, and emotional support. Throughout the day, I prioritise maintaining dignity, respect, and empathy in all interactions with clients.
Do you have an interest in a particular area of healthcare?
I have a strong interest in the area of disability support. I am passionate about supporting individuals with disabilities to enhance their quality of life and promote their independence. This field allows me to provide personalized care that respects each person's unique needs and abilities. I find it rewarding to collaborate with individuals, their families, and multidisciplinary teams to create inclusive environments and empower individuals to achieve their goals.
