Sheetal Bhatt’s Inspiring Journey into Early Childhood Education

Domestic

Born in Jammu, Kashmir, and raised across many parts of India due to her father’s military postings, Sheetal comes from a proud Kashmiri Pandit family. Her father, a retired Colonel in the Indian Army, and her mother, a lifelong teacher, instilled in her the values of discipline, dedication, and a deep respect for learning.

Now an NZTC graduate and practicing as an early childhood teacher, Sheetal credits her upbringing—and especially the example set by her mother—for inspiring her to pursue a career in education.

“I realised my true calling when I saw my mother teach children with such love and patience. That, combined with the guidance of my father at home, made me feel this is what I want to do in life,” she shares.

Before arriving in New Zealand, Sheetal worked in the education sector in India, where she witnessed firsthand the impact that quality early learning has on a child’s lifelong development. It was this insight that led her to focus on early childhood education (ECE) when she migrated to Aotearoa.

“Early childhood education is the foundation of all learning—it shapes a child’s future. To truly understand New Zealand’s education system, I knew my journey had to start from the very base—the early years.”

When it came to choosing a tertiary provider, Sheetal says the strong reputation and commitment to excellence of New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) made the decision easy.

“NZTC has earned its place with trust and dedication. Their flexible study options and constant student support made it possible for me to balance my professional life and studies effectively. I felt guided and encouraged every step of the way.”

She also praised NZTC’s use of technology to create an accessible, caring, and connected learning environment.

“The college brings education to every home. No matter your background, you feel empowered and supported.”

Now working as a relieving teacher at an early childhood centre, Sheetal begins her day by welcoming children and whānau, fostering a warm and inclusive atmosphere. Her daily routine includes a mix of age-appropriate activities, creative learning, storytelling, and ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all tamariki.

“My goal is always to nurture each child’s potential, observe their progress, and support their unique learning journey. Teaching is not only about activities—it’s about living values.”

Sheetal is especially passionate about culturally responsive teaching and sees it as a cornerstone of her practice. Her favourite course at NZTC was Culturally Responsive Early Childhood Education, and she’s eager to contribute to the preservation of Māori, Pasifika, and other cultural heritages in early learning settings.

“Cultural immersion in ECE fosters identity, belonging, and deep respect. I want to promote inclusive environments that celebrate the diverse backgrounds of our children and their whānau.”

Sheetal offers heartfelt thanks to New Zealand Tertiary College for playing such a pivotal role in her professional and personal growth.

“I sincerely thank NZTC for giving me this opportunity. The knowledge and skills I have gained empower me to serve my community effectively. I am committed to using everything I’ve learned to contribute to society and make a positive difference.”
