Name: Pearl Madan

Pearl Madan knew from an early age that she enjoyed working with children. After studying a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, she joined a non-governmental organisation in Mumbai, India, where she was first introduced to teaching young autistic children through the organisation's early intervention centre.

However, it was while working at a Montessori preschool that she decided to pursue a career in early childhood education.

“I enjoy being there for the little moments for the children and supporting them as they become empowered individuals ready to step out into the bigger world,” Pearl said.

“I also enjoy assisting children as they work towards their interests and accomplish their goals. I feel that if they receive the right guidance now and are pointed in the right direction, there is no end to what they can achieve as they grow up – and I would be a contributor to that.”

During her time at the preschool, Pearl felt the need to further her knowledge of early childhood education by studying a program that would give her the opportunity to get practical experience during her studies. NZTC's Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE) met all of her requirements.

“What I liked best about my studies with NZTC was that I had the chance to gain hands-on experience as I was studying. It allowed me to work with children and learn from teachers who had a lot of experience in the field. Field Practice gave me the opportunity to work at different centres, experience different environments, and see how different centres function,” Pearl explained.

She is currently teaching at an early childhood centre in Auckland, New Zealand, where she is continuing to gain valuable experience. One day, she hopes to apply what she has learnt during her studies and work in New Zealand home in India, introducing play as a vital tool that aids children’s learning.

“I want to create an environment where children have the opportunity to explore their interest and develop as competent individuals. I believe that play is integral to a child’s development and should, therefore, be incorporated into their daily lives.”

Pearl’s ultimate goal is to open her own centre. “Besides applying the skills that I have learnt through NZTC and the New Zealand early childhood education system, I would like to innovate and enhance children’s skill sets and innate intelligence.”
