Brenda Capistrano
A passion for children’s education grew into a fulfilling career for dedicated graduate diploma recipient, Brenda Capistrano.
Brenda's journey began in the retail industry, but her heart was always elsewhere. Her curiosity and joy for how children see the world motivated a new career path into early childhood education.
Originally from the Philippines, Brenda made Aotearoa home for herself and her family. “I’ve embraced the culture and values of Aotearoa and feel grateful to raise my children and build a career in this beautiful country,” she said.
The driving force behind Brenda’s academic and professional success is her children. Watching them grow and learn has motivated her to support other children in their unique learning journeys.
“They’ve taught me patience, creativity, and the importance of seeing the world through a child’s eyes,” she reflected.
Choosing to study with NZTC was a pivotal decision. Brenda found the flexibility and support she needed to balance family, work, and education.
“The flexibility and reputation of NZTC made it the perfect fit. It’s been a positive and amazing experience. The platform is user-friendly, and I always felt supported by the lecturers and student services team.”
One of her most influential mentors has been NZTC staff member Chelsea Bracefield. “Chelsea’s encouraging feedback and timely guidance helped build my confidence. Her clear, constructive feedback helped deepen my reflections and improve the quality of my writing,” Brenda said with gratitude.
Currently working at BestStart, Brenda’s day-to-day is filled with planning engaging experiences, supporting tamariki, and building relationships with whānau. “Every day is different and filled with joy, discovery, and connection.”
Throughout her studies at NZTC, Brenda developed a special interest in supporting language and communication development in children. “It’s amazing how early conversations, storytelling, and meaningful interactions lay the foundation for lifelong learning,” she said.
Looking ahead, Brenda is excited for what the future holds. “I’d love to take on new challenges that allow me to grow professionally—whether that’s through further study, taking on more responsibility, or contributing to curriculum development.”
Her advice to others considering early childhood education?
“If you’re passionate about making a difference in children’s lives, pursue it wholeheartedly. The journey can be challenging, but the rewards are truly worth it.”
