NZTC Student Finds Her Calling in Early Childhood Education
From imaginative childhood games to inspiring group times in a busy preschool centre, Mikhaela Cruz has always felt a natural connection to teaching. Originally from Manila, Philippines, and now living in Aotearoa New Zealand, she is on a dedicated journey to becoming a fully qualified early childhood teacher.
“I’ve always had a passion for working with children,” she says. “Even when I was little, I’d pretend to be a teacher when playing with my cousins. That instinct to help and guide others has always been there.”
In high school, she had the opportunity to explore that passion more formally through an early childhood education course. A 20-hour placement in an ECE centre as part of the course became a turning point.
“That experience made me think, ‘Oh wow, this is really fun!’ It felt natural and rewarding and confirmed that this was the right path for me.”
After high school, she began working at a preschool as an unqualified teacher, balancing her role with part-time study. These early hands-on experiences helped her develop strong time management skills, a solid work ethic, and most importantly, the confidence to pursue teaching as a career.
Mikhaela’s biggest inspiration comes not only from the kaiako she works with but from the tamariki themselves.
“Their curiosity, joy, and individuality inspire me every day. Every milestone they reach reminds me why I chose this path.”
Working full-time in a preschool while studying hasn’t been without its challenges, but she credits New Zealand Tertiary College for making the journey possible.
“I chose NZTC because their program lets me study full-time online while continuing to work full-time in a centre. That flexibility has been a game changer.”
Through NZTC Online, Mikhaela can manage her coursework around her shifts, using evenings and weekends to stay on top of assessments.
During her time at NZTC, one course that’s particularly resonated with her is Holistic Development in the Early Years.
“It taught me to see tamariki as whole beings — physical, emotional, social, cultural, and spiritual. That knowledge changed the way I approach my role and reminded me that wellbeing is just as important as learning outcomes.”
As Mikhaela continues working toward her Bachelor of Teaching (ECE), her goal is to become a registered teacher and deepen her impact in the sector. She’s particularly passionate about supporting tamariki in their social and emotional development.
“I want every child to feel a sense of belonging, confidence, and connection. That’s the foundation for all other learning.”
