Master of Early Childhood Education

Laura Wang shares the inspiration behind her postgraduate studies, and how her Master of Early Childhood Education is benefiting her teaching practice.

Name: Laura Wang

Qualification: Master of Early Childhood Education

Laura Wang draws her inspiration from a relief teacher she met during her teaching career.

Her passion for working with young children led her to study a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Early Childhood Education). Later, she encountered a relief teacher who was pursuing a PhD. Laura was motivated to continue her own academic journey, and deepen her knowledge in ECE as a result.

Now, she’s completing her Master of Early Childhood Education qualification with the college, while putting her newfound knowledge into practice in her role as a registered teacher.

“Pursuing a Master of Early Childhood Education has significantly enhanced my teaching practice and knowledge base. I’ve successfully integrated course learnings into my daily work, contributing to our team’s planning, assessment and evaluation processes.

“My ultimate goal is to drive positive change that benefits children’s wellbeing and development.”

Laura shares her favourite aspects of early childhood education and study, and what a day in the life looks like as an ECE teacher:

What does a day at work look like for you?

I work with four to five-year-olds. My day begins with the warm welcome of our tamariki. Collaborating with colleagues, I create engaging indoor and outdoor learning environments that cater to diverse needs. Our focus is on fostering a supportive and inclusive space where children thrive, developing their agency, autonomy, and sense of belonging.

Do you have an interest in a particular area of early childhood education?

I have a great interest in the area of early literacy, especially reading. I’m passionate about fostering a love of books and stories in young children. I strongly believe reading benefits children’s lifelong learning and development!

What has been your favourite course so far in your studies?

My favourite course is ‘The Ethical Self in Early Childhood Education’, which has significantly influenced my perspectives. The concept of professional agency has inspired me to become an agent for positive change within early childhood settings.
