Joanne Wang
When Joanne decided to pursue a career in early childhood education, she knew she was following her heart — but like many adult learners, financial pressures stood in the way. Thanks to NZTC’s reduced fees offer, she has been able to study toward her Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education) with confidence and renewed motivation.
Joanne has always found joy in spending time with children. The opportunity to support their learning and witness their growth each day is what inspired her to turn that passion into a profession.
“Being with children and seeing their learning in a joyful environment makes my work feel meaningful and rewarding. I want to be an educator who provides a safe, trusting, and positive learning environment for every child.”
Currently working as a reliever at an early childhood centre, Joanne’s days are full but fulfilling. Her role covers everything from ensuring children’s safety to planning meaningful learning experiences.
She spends her time observing children’s interests, engaging in their play, supporting language and social development, and leading mat times that naturally weave learning into conversations. She also collaborates with her team on planning and assessment and regularly connects with families to support each child’s ongoing development.
NZTC’s reduced-fees promotion became the deciding factor that allowed Joanne to take the next step in her career.
“The tuition reduction eased both my financial and mental pressures. It allowed me to focus fully on my studies and practical teaching. It has been a great help to me.”
With financial stress eased, Joanne has been able to devote herself to her coursework, practicum experiences, and professional growth.
The flexibility of NZTC’s online learning model played a key role in Joanne’s decision to study with the college. The programme allowed her to balance her roles as a mother, student, and early childhood educator.
She also appreciated NZTC’s strong connections with the sector and the practical, hands-on nature of the curriculum.
“Each practicum has given me valuable experience. I’ve grown from a complete beginner into a confident student teacher, building a strong foundation for my future as a qualified teacher.”
Joanne has developed a particular interest in early language and literacy development. She hopes to create environments rich in vocabulary, books, storytelling, and meaningful conversations to help children build strong communication skills and confidence.
Looking ahead, she plans to continue working in an early childhood centre, take on more teaching responsibilities, and strengthen relationships with whānau to support children’s holistic learning and wellbeing.
Joanne’s journey demonstrates how NZTC’s reduced fees offer can open doors for aspiring teachers who need financial support to take the next step.
For Joanne, the reduced-fees promotion didn’t just lower the cost of study — it made her dream career possible.
